BURNT ISLAND LIGHT - Maine

Location: Boothbay Harbor Entrance
Currently Operational: Yes
Height: 61 feet
Year Established: 1821

Burnt Island Lighthouse was established in 1821 on the shore at the entrance to Boothbay Harbor in Maine. Over the years, the lighthouse has undergone several renovations and upgrades to improve its visibility and reliability.

At the time the lighthouse was automated in 1988, it was one of only eleven staffed lighthouses left in the United States. In 1998, ownership of the lighthouse was transferred from the Coast Guard to the Maine Department of Marine Resources.

The tower and the keeper’s cottage were recently restored in time to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the landmark site. Today the property continues to function as a working light station, and also hosts a living history museum and serves as an outstanding educational and recreational facility.
